A correctly selected mattress for side sleeping will help to solve many health problems, from back pain and insomnia to sleep apnea. But it is worth remembering that even the best mattress cannot last forever. On average, the mattress should be changed every 5-10 years – the exact period depends on the quality of the mattress, intensity of use, weight of the person. If you handle the mattress carefully: use the mattress cover, regularly turn the mattress over and clean it – it can last 12-15 years. But if you notice that “dips” appeared on the mattress, if a creak is heard at the slightest movement, then it is time to change the mattress.

Which mattress is better to choose for a healthy sleep?
Much depends on the correct mattress: healthy sleep, well-being, good posture. How to choose a comfortable mattress for side sleeping? Of course, you can try to sit down and even lie down on it in the store, but a few minutes on the mattress will not be able to give a complete picture of how comfortable it will actually be. It is much more reliable to determine in advance the main parameters – elasticity, filler material – and look for a mattress based on the main criteria and individual characteristics. We will tell you how to do it.
What mattresses are – we understand the intricacies of choice
Finding the right mattress is easy today. However, from the outside, they all look about the same, and it is often not obvious to the buyer what the difference is. All the most interesting and important is hidden under the upholstery, so for a conscious and balanced choice you need to know the “anatomy” of the mattress.
Types of mattresses
Mattresses can be spring and springless. In spring, elasticity is provided by spring blocks, and in springless – by a combination of several layers of different materials. Rigidity and elasticity do not depend on the type in any way – both types can be soft, medium hard or hard.
In addition, ordinary and orthopedic mattresses are distinguished. Orthopedic ones provide body support more correct from the point of view of anatomy: different sections of such mattresses have different stiffness and elasticity. Ordinary mattresses have the same elasticity in any area.
The “filling” of the mattress determines its price, characteristics, comfort and durability. Therefore, be sure to ask what the mattress is made of. It is worth saying that the filling of modern mattresses often consists of several different materials. Here are typical types of fillers.
Polyurethane foam. Inexpensive, durable, hypoallergenic synthetic material, which is used both in budget models and in expensive mattresses. Polyurethane foam can be soft or very resilient. The elasticity of this material makes mattresses with polyurethane foam quite durable.
Latex. This is a natural material, the hallmark of which is good elasticity – latex mattresses do not lose shape for a very long time, they are comfortable and soft. Latex is often used when creating premium models of mattresses.
Coconut fiber Eco-friendly material that has antibacterial properties. Coconut coir perfectly passes air and does not allow the mattress to become damp. In addition, it gives the mattress the necessary rigidity.
Sisal. Natural fiber, similar in characteristics to coconut coir.
Ortofom. Orto Foam is an elastic synthetic material that provides a light massage effect. This material is close in properties to latex.
Memory foam. High-tech modern filler that can “remember” the shape of the body. Most often used in soft mattresses and models of medium hardness. Sleeping on a mattress with a filler from this material is very convenient, although many note unusual sensations at the first time of use: such a mattress seems to “envelop” the body.
Spring unit with dependent springs. The basis of such mattresses are interconnected springs. Mattresses on the block are inexpensive, but they last relatively short: over time, the block is deformed, a “failure” forms on the mattress, the springs begin to creak. Today, such mattresses are becoming less common, but it is too early to write them off: due to the low price, this is a rational choice for a bed, which is rarely used, for example, beds for guests.
Spring unit with independent springs. In such mattresses, each spring is isolated from neighboring ones and packed in a cover made of textile material. Sleeping on such mattresses is very comfortable, they adapt to the lines of the body, provide excellent support and creak less than mattresses on the block. The more springs, the more comfortable (and more expensive) the mattress will be.
The choice of rigidity and size of the mattress
There is a very common misconception that soft mattresses harm posture, and hard ones, on the contrary, are very good for health. This is a too simplistic view of things; in reality, everything is a little more complicated.
Too hard a mattress can disrupt blood circulation and literally deprive sleep: several times during the night you will wake up because your arm or leg has lost sensitivity. But a too soft mattress is not as comfortable as it might seem: if the mattress does not provide support for the back, the case will inevitably end in muscle pain.
Where is the middle ground? Choosing a mattress, you need to build on your own parameters. For miniature people it is better to choose a soft mattress, people of a middle weight category will use moderately rigid models, and if your weight is more than average, pay attention to hard mattresses that can fully support the spine.
However, not only weight matters, but also age. Moderately hard and elastic mattresses are suitable for young people under 25 years old. During this period, the musculoskeletal system is actively formed, and a soft mattress can ruin the posture, which will later be difficult to correct. From 25 to 50 years, when choosing a mattress, you can be guided by your weight and personal preferences. After 50 years, it is recommended to sleep on softer mattresses: excessively rigid models can impair blood circulation and provoke pain in the back and neck.
Separate recommendations exist for those who suffer from diseases of the spine. In this case, it will be safer to consult with your doctor. However, there are some general rules:
- for diseases or injuries of the thoracic or cervical spine, it is advisable to sleep on a mattress of medium hardness;
- in case of problems with the lumbar, soft mattresses provide maximum comfort;
- with osteochondrosis, well-being will improve a moderately hard mattress.
Before buying, be sure to measure the size of the bed, more precisely – the dimensions of the inner perimeter of the base. The size of the mattress should in no case exceed the size of the bed, otherwise it will quickly lose shape.
Additional nuances when choosing a mattress
For ease of use, modern mattresses are equipped with various additional parts. So, for example, the side handles will make turning the mattress much easier (and it is advisable to turn the mattress at least twice a year, so it retains its original shape longer).
Often on the side surface of the mattress you can see a small hole – this is a valve for ventilation, it allows air to circulate inside the mattress and prevents the filler from getting wet. Such a valve is necessary if you live in a humid or hot climate.
When buying a mattress, it is worth taking care of accessories for it. The mattress cover is not necessary, but desirable: it will protect the mattress from dust and pollution. In addition, the mattress cover can slightly adjust the stiffness and make the mattress even more convenient – a little harder or softer.
