Contrast rate will affect how well a monitor can display both darker and brighter areas of an image, but in most cases it does not mean that a monitor with a higher contrast rate will automatically have better colors or more vivid images. A general rule of thumb is to never get one with less than 1000:1 since anything below will likely return poor results when displaying more “realistic” things like playing video games or watching movies/tv shows. The most commonly used panels in gaming monitors as it provides the best of both worlds when it comes to speed and color reproduction. They do not suffer from as short viewing angles as TN panels, nor as long input lag as IPS ones so they are usually the best option. The only real downside is that VA panels have a problem with displaying very dark blacks compared to most other panel types which means they can look washed out or “greyish” if you view them from an angle off center, though this is a problem with most monitor types including those found in professional graphic design monitors.

Generally have good static contrast ratios however due to them not being able to produce very deep blacks, it means that the brightness of their whites are also not as high. This makes them have decent vibrancy but can sometimes make colors look washed out. They do however produce good blacks which makes them suitable for playing anything that requires fast paced action without too much ghosting being an issue.
